Tiger Woods Foundation announces new partnership with Discovery Education

The Tiger Woods Foundation celebrated its 20th anniversary last week. To mark the momentous milestone, golfer and philanthropist Tiger Woods hosted “A Celebration of Unexpected Champions,” at the iconic New York Public Library on Oct. 20. Woods was joined onstage by preeminent journalist and news anchor Charlie Rose and NIKE, Inc. co-founder and visionary Phil Knight for a candid conversation about the past, present and future of TWF. The evening not only highlighted the past two decades of transformative assistance TWF has brought to thousands of underserved students, but during the event, Woods officially announced TWF’s new and exciting partnership with Discovery Education.

The partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, signifies a broadening of scope for TWF. As the foundation’s 20th year approached, Woods issued a challenge: Take TWF’s impact to a whole new level by improving the lives of millions of underserved youth around the world. The foundation’s partnership with Discovery Education will fulfill that challenge by digitizing and scaling existing TWF curriculum and programs and sharing them globally.

“We’ve made great strides in helping young people and their communities through education,” Woods said. “But, we need to do more. This is a global issue that impacts all of us. Discovery Education’s quality resources allow us to expand our mission worldwide.”

Discovery Education provides educators worldwide with the engaging digital resources, sustained professional development and supportive community they need to build dynamic learning environments that support the success of all learners. With an expertise in award-winning digital resources including interactive lessons and virtual experiences, Discovery Education will leverage its know-how and worldwide network of educators to share the TGR Learning Lab experience with classrooms, and empower underserved youth to thrive in their professional and personal communities.

Launching in January 2017, the new digital platform will provide assets and tools for students between the ages of 10-18 years old — all at no cost. Older students will be informed of the opportunities available in post-secondary education along with the tools to find the best fit. Additionally, they will be shown the multitude of educational and career pathways available in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. Educators, students and families will have access to standards-aligned lessons, supplemental activities, webinars, videos and interactive, digital experiences. An upcoming virtual field trip will bring the curriculum to life by transporting educators and students outside their classroom walls.

“Educating students so that they are ready to meet the challenges ahead in life takes more than a textbook,” said Dr. Katherine Bihr, vice president of programs and education at the Tiger Woods Foundation. “While the foundation has helped thousands of young people and teachers over the past 20 years, TWF is excited to work with Discovery Education to share our lessons and curriculum with a broader, global audience.”

“Discovery Education is proud to join in this celebration of the Tiger Woods Foundation’s 20 years of breakthrough student transformations,” said Bill Goodwyn, president and CEO of Discovery Education. “We share the foundation’s mission to support young people and their communities through education, and we look forward to working with Tiger and the foundation’s talented team to bring students worldwide engaging digital content that will help prepare them for college and career.”

Everything TWF has unleashed has been led by Woods’ clear vision to help students in need thrive in school, their communities and the working world. And together, with Discovery Education, the Tiger Woods Foundation is dedicated to the growth of this important work.

Champions of the unexpected for 20 years.
