PGA Jr. Golf League 2015 season: TWLC’s Purple Cobras off to a great start!

It was an overcast Friday afternoon at Dad Miller Golf Course where the Purple Cobras of the Tiger Woods Learning Center were preparing for their first PGA Junior League golf match versus the Navy Destroyers from Navy Golf Course.

Our team of eight boys and girls were warming up on the range while some were working on their three footers on the putting green. All of the players displayed anxious excitement as our first start time drew near.

For most, on both teams, this was their very first form of golf competition. But the great thing about the PGA Jr. League is that the players do not compete alone. In this two-person scramble format, students are able to play a team format of golf competition, which is rare; in most cases tournaments are grueling, individual stroke play.

Within the first four holes of competition, I witnessed five fist-pumps, seven high-fives, a left-to-right putt from 30 feet drop followed by a “woo-hoo” and a plethora of golf claps after every tee shot.

It was so much fun for us adults to watch the matches that it must’ve felt like the Ryder Cup for the kids. The Purple Cobras played their hearts out earning 9.5 points to the Navy Destroyers’ 2.5 points. The Navy Destroyers look to return the favor when we play them at their course next. Way to go, Cobras!!!
